Tours come in all different shapes and sizes. Whether its a world tour or just a regional excursion, how you setup a tour and plan it out can make a major impact on the success you get out of it. There is a fantastic book called Tour Smart by Martin Atkins (https://www.amazon.com/Tour-Smart-Break-Martin-Atkins/dp/0979731305) which does a fantastic job at explaining how to maximize your efforts during a tour by giving you so much information and I highly recommend that you go buy it and read it at least twice.
Having knowledge, information, wisdom, etc is what separates a well-planned tour from a nightmare disaster. You might end up lucky, but generally, better planning leads to happiness in all things and touring is no exception. First and foremost though, you have decide what the goal of the tour is and then work backward. Is your goal to increase your fanbase, to make money, to get your music into more ears, or just to have a good time? The choice is 100% yours, unless you’re owned by a label, but let’s assume you’re the boss.
If your goal is to turn a profit, then you’ve got to do things on tour that are going to facilitate that. If you spend more than you make on your tour with the aforementioned goal, then you’re gonna fail. I could go into using analytics from your social media pages to calculate the group type that you should target with advertisements and how to pick and contact venues for your specific itinerary and what kind of merch items to sell and the most important people to bring along besides band members and whether to rent a bus/van or lease one or buy one, but the truth is that everything is specific to your goals.
